TheProcurement Officer

As a procurement officer, your responsibility is to ensure that the resource needs of your institution are met. In a laboratory animal setting, this may include managing purchasing for multiple researchers, veterinarians, and LAR Managers, as well as directing the flow of institution-wide resources, having

budgetary oversight, or participating in a project bidding process. At Charles River, we understand the need for a streamlined purchasing process that includes global access to a comprehensive portfolio of products and services as well as dedicated customer support to help you with purchasing decisions.

Time is of the essence! Even the smallest delay can be costly and potentially impact the search for a new therapeutic drug. If a researcher, veterinarian, or LAR manager looks to you to ensure that they have access to the appropriate animal models or services when and where they require them, you must be able to respond quickly. With multiple production facilities located worldwide offering a comprehensive portfolio of products and services, Charles River is well-positioned to be a single-source provider and help streamline your procurement process.

Delivering on Our Promise

Globally, the vast majority of our animal orders are shipped via ground transportation. This method allows Charles River to efficiently manage the biosecurity and welfare of the animal models as well as provide more flexibility in delivery schedules for you. In the United States, Direct Services, Inc., our transportation partner for 30 years, employs drivers trained in animal transportation and maintains a fleet of temperature-controlled vehicles equipped with redundant backup systems. This strong partnership ensures that your animals will arrive in the same health condition as when they left our facility. For scheduling flexibility, Direct Services is linked into the Charles River computer system for real-time updates of delivery schedules or delivery requirements.

In Europe, 99% of all deliveries are also made by dedicated ground transport. All animals are accompanied by health reports and shipping documentation are also shipped in climate-controlled vehicles by drivers specifically trained in handling and transporting live animals.

Benefits

  • Drivers and managers have been trained by Charles River in animal delivery requirements and in Charles River's Total Quality Management process.
  • Deliveries are exclusive to the Charles River system, and drivers will not carry any animals from other institutions or suppliers.
  • Vehicles are temperature-controlled and equipped with redundant backup systems.
  • Delivery schedules are flexible.
